What birds can you expect to see in a backyard in Maryland? While every property is different and will have a different mix of birds, many are pretty typical. I live in a suburban neighborhood between Baltimore and DC. Our yard has a lot of mature trees and is within a mile or so of ponds and other water. These are the birds commonly seen in our central Maryland backyard.
Squirrels can drive a backyard bird watcher a bit crazy. How can you keep squirrels from eating all the seed you put out for birds? You might wonder if the solution is a seed squirrels won’t eat. Well, there is one seed, but unless you want a very limited variety of birds, it’s probably not the solution you hope for. I do have a better suggestion though.
Years ago I saw a bag of Nutra-Saff (sometimes called “Golden Safflower”) on a store shelf and gave this version of safflower a try. None of the birds in my yard seemed impressed. Eventually it got eaten but not enthusiastically, so I didn’t buy more of it. But recently, after writing a post on Choosing Seed For Backyard Birds, I started thinking about it and decided to give Nutra-Saff another try.
